Hawaii Self Storage Honored For Child Advocacy Efforts
Last October, Hawaii Self Storage (HSS) and owner Mike Wood were honored as part of a ceremony sponsored by Governor Linda Lingle and Representative John Mizuno honoring Hawaii’s Outstanding Advocates for Children and Youth. The company was recognized for its ongoing Lockers for Literacy program that provides books to local public school first graders to promote literacy. HSS donates two dollars for every new locker rented and expects to purchase more than $15,000 worth of books in 2010 for 15 elementary schools. Owner Mike Wood was honored for donating $9.2 million of his own money to create Ho’omalu O Na Kamali’i, a first-of-its-kind receiving home for the children of O`ahu.
These two programs represent just a small part of the community outreach efforts in which HSS participates each year. Other projects include renewable student scholarships, sponsorship of two youth athletic teams, partnership in the Lokahi Giving Project that provides donations and enrichment opportunities to struggling families, and partnership in the Aloha United Way’s Load the Locker campaign that encourages donation of toiletries to help families and children in need.
