Inept Burglar Locks Himself Inside Storage Building

Last spring, Eric McHan, owner of Richards Mini Storage in Moulton, Ala., noticed a suspicious truck at the self-storage facility. As he approached the vehicle, the passenger fled. That’s when Mr. McHan heard what sounded like someone inside one of the locked storage buildings.

Sheriff’s deputies used bolt cutters to cut the padlock off the building and discovered 28-year-old Gary Dewayne Flake inside, wearing gloves and a light strapped around his forehead. He told investigators that he had entered an unlocked storage building and climbed over into the locked building looking for items to steal. When asked about his plan to get out of the locked building, Flake replied, “I figured it’d be easier to get out from the inside.”

Apparently, he figured wrong. Deputies arrested the suspect and charged him with one count of burglary.
